TERRA INCOGNITA
15 September — 23 November 2024
Solo Exhibition by Giorgio Petracci
The technical term Terra Incognita is used in cartography, from 16th Century Italy, to indicate the under-explored and uncharted areas on the map. Its meaning traces back to ancient Rome, in a similar expression, Hic sunt dracones (Here be dragons) — fertile ground for the birth of myths and legends.
For Italian artist Giorgio Petracci's inaugural presentation in Asia, the solo exhibition Terra Incognita echoes the exploration of new territory while keeping traces of history and sentiment from the past.
Petracci's artistic practice encompasses the thinking and making processes in both two and three-dimensional forms. His paintings and wooden sculptures form conversations from the moment of creating and are always viewed in pairs at their final presentation. Petracci reproduces imaginary places born from a personal exploration towards the unknown territory. From the conceptual depth of the research to the surface of the paintings, he traces and symbolises the past sentimentally, reimagining the walls of an ancient temple or monument where time and men have left their mark with stories.
Petracci's wooden sculptures not only contain the sentiment of the past but also embody the physical reclamation of materiality. He uses found wooden parts from old furniture, even the dismantled pieces from the furniture he made for his child, to reassemble and revalue through the expression of sculpture. The unused elements of the past in architecture are redefined and blended with Petracci's contemporary artistic approach, making "Terra Incognita" a hypothetical term for rediscovering the past.
Terra Incognita becomes an immaterial space to forge new interpretations from the past — it redefines territory as well as redefining time.

About the Artist
GIORGIO PETRACCI (b.1974, Italy)
Giorgio Petracci is an Italian painter and sculptor based in Paris, France. With an educational background in Archaeology, Petracci's interest in artmaking stems from the overlapping of time, spaces, and memories.
Petracci's paintings are windows to alternative dimensions: exploring matter and existence, innovations, and landscapes yet to be discovered. They encourage the viewer to embark on a journey of personal and emotional discovery. His paintings provide a gateway for viewers to glimpse the inner imagined realm beneath the canvas — they are whispers conveyed through the lingering interplay of light and shadow, inspired by his thoughts.
